Description
This session will review emerging data on the frequency of depletion of iron stores, especially among repeat donors, effects on donors and strategies to replace and replete donor iron stores. The lack of correlation with donor hemoglobin and why this screen is insufficient to protect donors is emphasized. We will discuss several trials that have documented the feasibility and efficacy of replacing donor iron and strategies to mitigate donor iron loss.

  • Discuss lack of correlation of donor hemoglobin screen and donor iron status
  • Discuss potential measures for mitigating iron depletion in blood donors including changes in donor hemoglobin cutoff, donation interval and iron replacement strategies.
  • Discuss the prevalence and determinants of low iron stores in blood donors.
