Description
The complex changes to health care being implemented with the Affordable Care Act present a very real challenge to all who are involved in providing stem cell transplants. This session will focus on the details of the Affordable Care Act, the implementation process, and how it specifically affects patients that will need or have received a stem cell transplant. Areas that will benefit recipients as well as those changes that are of concern will be reviewed.

  • Describe components of the Affordable Care Act that will benefit the transplant patient and those that are of concern.
  • Discuss the National Marrow Donor Program's strategy to understand and remedy issues that have arisen with implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
  • Review the current approach by the National Bone Marrow Program and American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation to improve reimbursement for stem cell transplant.
  • Summarize the impact of the Affordable Care Act on transplant patients, unrelated donors, and the facilities that work with these individuals.
