Description
Over the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in knowledge regarding the pharmacotherapy treatment of children and adolescents with various psychiatric disorders. However, uncertainty continues regarding the safety of several medications used for pediatric psychiatric disorders. Moreover, due to the recent controversies over suicidality with the use of antidepressants, cardiac problems with the stimulants, and metabolic syndrome with the antipsychotics, clinicians are confronted with contradictory information. Parents and the media are increasingly concerned about the use of pharmacotherapy even with children for whom these treatments have been shown to be useful and safe. The overarching aim of this Institute is to provide up-to-date information about the practical use and safety of medications for the treatment of pediatric psychopathology. Presenters provide evidence-based data (both negative and positive) and/or systematic clinical observations of treatment of various major psychiatric disorders. When indicated, case presentations are included.
