Description
Although substance use disorders (SUD) are frequently comorbid in adolescents with psychiatric disorders, most child and adolescent psychiatrists in practice may not be familiar with management of substance use disorders. In addition, many child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship training programs may not have adequate training in substance use disorders. Hence, this Institute serves dual purposes of providing evidence-based practical approaches in management of substance use disorders among adolescents that are helpful to mental health and addiction practitioners, as well as providing information to supplement fellowship training. Dr. Volkow, the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), leads an excellent group of speakers. She addresses neurobiological issues that are relevant to adolescent SUD. Dr. Kazura provides an overview of adolescent substance use, discussion of "normative" use in adolescents, and risk and protective factors. Dr. Bukstein presents information from the AACAP practice parameter on SUD, including issues relating to assessment and placement in appropriate treatment settings. Dr. Upadhyaya addresses specific issues related to alcohol, nicotine, and marijuana, followed by Dr. Hopfer who addresses specific issues related to opiates, club drugs, stimulants, and inhalants. Dr. Brown provides an overview of psychosocial treatment approaches for adolescent SUD. Dr. Riggs provides information on management of psychiatric and SUD comorbidities. Dr. Martin addresses specific issues related to psychopharmacology of SUD in adolescents.
