How can we meet the national goal of increasing the number of college graduates by 50% by the year 2020, when the majority of first-year community college students are not college ready? At Howard Community College, increased developmental course placement and decreased calculus-prepared STEM majors necessitated a college preparedness initiative in partnership with the county’s public school system. English and math aptitudes are assessed in 11th grade, and remediation or advanced strategies are used to enhance college success. Initiative logistics and preliminary findings will be presented.
