Description
This public policy session will explore the merging of political action and policy development through an analysis of the content and status of mental health and health care issues in the current political environment.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will be able to discuss the relationship between policy and politics as well as the impact of the 2008 Presidential and Congressional elections on the consideration of health, mental health, and aging legislation in the 111th Congress.

• Participants will be able to cite the key health and mental health initiatives that will be addressed by the U. S. Congress and the Federal regulatory agencies in 2009.

• Participants will be able to identify ways that geriatric psychiatrists can help to shape public policy through grassroots advocacy initiatives and will be able to utilize those strategies.
