Description
Whether the issue is getting the right person in, the right person trained or keeping someone you have, staffing issues affect all phases of library operations. There are additional challenges in a multigenerational workplace. This session will teach you how to successfully mentor new librarians, coach/train for succession planning, and retain the expertise of the experienced librarian. Through discussion, exercises, and real-world examples, participants will gain a deeper understanding of these challenges and acquire a number of tools to use in their own libraries as they struggle to meet the needs of a fast-changing service environment. The program will also provide a brief review of the professional needs of the various generations of law librarians and the formal and informal opportunities for education and then an overview of St. John’s new Manhattan-based initiative, including in the MLS program a broad-based multi-discipline law librarianship program for emerging professionals; facilitating access for mid-level professionals taking on managerial responsibilities to consortia of current and recently-retired law library directors; and finally a post-MLS certificate program in KM and CI to address those wishing to retool to meet new challenges and opportunities.
