Description
Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the characteristics of a successful expert witness.

2. Describe the elements needed for the development of an expert opinion.

Giving expert testimony, whether at a deposition or at trial, can be a challenging experience. Testifying effectively involves characteristics and skills that are very specific. The purpose of this workshop is to highlight the requisites that characterize best practices of the most effective testifying experts. The topics presented are divided into three categories: preparation before testifying, behaviors during testimony and responsibilities after testimony. A few of the areas discussed in detail include: document review, defining the issues of the case, working with the attorney, interacting with the judge and jury, how to respond to loaded questions, anticipating testifying pitfalls and professional demeanor when under pressure. Familiarity with the topics presented will enable the legal nurse consultant to be a more effective and confident witness.
