I am a certified life care planner and legal nurse consultant in private practice for ten years. I have worked behind the scenes and as a life care expert in cases involving medical malpractice, personal injury, Worker's compensation, and product liability. I have spoken on numerous occasions to both national and local AALNC meetings. I have been a registered nurse for 27 years and hold certification in rehabilitation nursing. My prior clinical experience was in pediatrics, pediatric critical care, and home health care with extensive experience with oncology patients.
Description
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify when a life care plan would be appropriate when working on cases involving a terminal disease.
2. Identify various options for end of life including the continuation and discontinuation of treatment and palliative care options.
This session will address the use of life care planning in cases of oncology and other terminal illnesses such as HIV/AIDS or end stage diseases such as renal disease or cardiac failure. The speaker will demonstrate why a life care plan is essential in these cases to promote quality of life, even as life expectancy is significantly diminished. It also can help all interested parties understand the needs of those clients who are facing a terminal illness for the purpose not only of education, but also the consideration of medically appropriate and compassionate medical care when considering damages in these cases.
