Description
As academic librarians we are regularly asked by faculty to cover the breadth of the entire research process in a sixty minute one-shot instruction session. It is challenging to meet both the expectations of faculty and the real needs of students given the time limitations inherent in this type of instructional setting. With the pervasiveness of one-shots, how can we ensure that these sessions are rich learning experiences and also formative for students as they develop their research skills? This presentation will suggest pedagogical best practices for one-shot sessions, with an emphasis on meaningful and practical strategies for assessment, planning, and engaging students in the learning process. We will also explore ways to transform traditional one-shots into embedded and authentic collaborations with teaching faculty. We will discuss examples of these alternatives, which include individual consultations with students, shorter sessions spread out over multiple weeks, librarian created class assignments, and video tutorials.
