I was formerly the director of a small Bible college library so I understand some of the unique challenges that small schools face. I currently work for Liberty University, the world's largest evangelical school with the largest online student body, assisting primarily distant graduate students. In August 2012, I taught a workshop required for all of the thousands of Liberty's online professors about Library Services for distance education.

Description
Many colleges and universities are considering adding distance education programs. These programs can be lucrative and allow you to serve students who can’t come to your campus. How do libraries effectively serve these online learners (and possibly additional adjunct faculty members)? We will begin by presenting an overview of distance library services (including various formats to provide distance education such as taped lectures, correspondence courses, synchronous and asynchronous, Blackboard course management, branch campuses, etc.) Once your institution has decided which format to use, there are a number of considerations for distant users. How do you authenticate off-campus users to access your subscription databases? How do these programs impact collection development, interlibrary loan and document delivery? How do you teach information literacy? How is reference or research assistance impacted? Accrediting bodies assess the level of comparability between your residential and distance programs. How do you provide comparable library services to patrons you might never physically see? This workshop will be helpful for those considering distance education as well as those who are new to this process.
