Breaking the toxic addiction: Moving schools to sustainable, green chemistry
Track : June 21, 2010
Program Code: 014
Date: Monday, June 21, 2010
Time: 11:10 AM to 11:30 AM  EST
Location: Capital Hilton - Federal B
SPEAKER :
Dwight G. Peavey, US EPA
Description
EPA has partnered with EJ public school systems to implement “integrated chemical management” programs in their K-12 science departments. EPA provides on-site assistance to establish a safe, secure chemical storage area with a “real time” inventory. All stock chemicals are removed from classrooms, laboratories, and prep rooms. Unwanted, outdated, hazardous, toxic and highly reactive chemicals are separated for removal and disposal. Every school has agreed to be mercury free. In conjunction with the partnership, science teachers and staff are educated and involved in the transition from toxic and hazardous chemistries towards sustainable, green chemistry. Understanding the basic training in hazards, safety and waste management is critical to make the transition.
