AHIMA Members,

Throughout the year, AHIMA hosts a number of events, meetings, and seminars that provide its members with the information necessary to excel as Health Information Management (HIM) professionals. Events and other interactive sessions also contribute to building a stronger community and furthering the profession of health information management. McKesson believes these sessions are instrumental in enabling the HIM community to remain at the forefront of current initiatives and play an influential role in driving healthcare reform.

A greater emphasis on interoperability across health systems is increasing the rate at which health information is exchanged, significantly heightening the responsibilities of the HIM role. Activities previously managed by HIM departments are now expanding to touch multiple areas of the provider organization. Effective knowledge transfer and leadership from HIM professionals will be the key to achieving the nation’s healthcare reform goals.

HIM Professionals: Leaders in Driving Healthcare Reform

McKesson views HIM professionals as leaders in driving healthcare reform for a number of reasons:

First, the recent American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) contained privacy and security provisions that significantly expand those originally outlined in the 2003 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements. As the exchange of health information increases, it is imperative that these measures be put into action to ensure the integrity and security of health information and to secure the trust of consumers.

Achieving consumer trust in sharing health information is needed to drive healthcare reform. Successful implementation of these measures will require leadership from HIM professionals and sharing of your knowledge and expertise in these areas.

Second, HIM professionals will be tasked with implementing ICD-10-CM/PCS.  This shift is a result of the advancement of healthcare and will further advance the industry through improved quality and performance measurement, research, and reimbursement.

Last, the Recovery Audit Contractors (RAC) program initiated by the government to recover improperly paid Medicare claims is not only significantly impacting providers financially, but also requires HIM resources to manage the process. HIM professionals will also have the opportunity to drive change in the organization by identifying areas of improvement to minimize risk in future audits.

McKesson: Solutions to Help You Address Industry Challenges

McKesson is dedicated to providing you with the solutions necessary to successfully meet these challenges. As the market share leader in document management for both Health Information Management and the Business Office, McKesson’s Horizon Patient Folder™ and Horizon Business Folder™ are enabling HIM professionals at more than  900 facilities across the United States and Canada to excel in their profession.

McKesson provides HIM solutions to enable your organizations to comply with the new privacy and security measures, ease the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes, and not only simplify the management of the RAC process, but proactively engage your organization in initiatives to minimize risk in the event of an audit.

McKesson proudly supports AHIMA and the Live Learning Center, and encourages members to take advantage of the opportunity to gain more in-depth knowledge of our industry and the events that affect our day-to-day activities.  As HIM professionals, you must be prepared to be leaders of change at this critical time in the healthcare industry.

Sincerely,
