Kathy Giannangelo, MA, RHIA, CCS, CPHIMS, FAHIMA is a Medical Informaticist with Language and Computing. In this position she supports the ontology, modeling, sales, and product development activities related to the creation and implementation of natural language processing applications where clinical terminology and classification systems are utilized. Giannangelo has over 30 years experience in the HIM field. Prior to joining L&C, she was director, practice leadership with AHIMA. Giannangelo has held the position of Senior Nosologist for a health information services company and served in various HIM roles, including vice president of product development, education specialist, director of medical records, quality assurance coordinator, and manager of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research team. She has developed classification, grouping and reimbursement systems products for healthcare providers, conducted seminars, and provided consulting assessments throughout the US, as well as in Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Bulgaria. Ms. Giannangelo has authored numerous articles and developed online continuing education courses on clinical terminologies. She is editor of a book on clinical terminologies, classifications, and data standards. As adjunct faculty at The College of St. Scholastica, she teaches the graduate level course, Clinical Vocabularies and Classification Systems. In addition, Giannangelo has been actively involved as a volunteer in the HIM profession on an international, national, state, and local level.
