Rhonda Butler is a senior clinical research analyst with 3M Health Information Systems. She is responsible for the development and annual update of the ICD-10 General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs) and Reimbursement Mappings under contract to CMS and the CDC, and for the annual update of the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System. She also led the project to convert the MS-DRGs to ICD-10, completed in September 2009. Previous roles at 3M include Codefinder ICD-10 software development and coding call center customer support.

Description
This session explores several key challenges to developing application-specific maps between incoming ICD-10 codes and ICD-9-CM based software. Drawing on direct experience in finding solutions for these challenges, specific examples will show why, when and how application-specific maps can successfully be developed and used.
