Description
As attested by this year's theme for the AOM annual meeting, "Business and the Environment" (B&E) research is entering the mainstream of the Academy of Management. An increasing number of scholars are interested in conducting "environmental" research, and many seek ways to have an impact on environmental management. For many, however, the way forward is not clear. Some lack a clear map of how to link their existing theoretical interests to important topics in business and the environment. Others lack an understanding of the major questions, methods, and findings of the existing scholarship in this domain. Finally, some may be concerned that research on business and the environment may be interpreted as advocacy rather than rigorous scholarship, which may deter them from engaging in this domain. The goal of this symposium is to help reduce these barriers. The symposium will bring together leading scholars from several disciplines (economics, sociology, strategy, and psychology) who have been conducting research on business and the environment for many years. These scholars will help clarify how B&E research fits into their disciplinary agendas and will provide a review of the major findings and agendas in their discipline of the business and environment literature. They will highlight research designs and methodologies used in the most rigorous research conducted in their domain. Most importantly, these scholars will share their perspectives on the important research questions that remain and on the methodologies that they expect will prove most useful. They will summarize what has been done, what questions remain, and what they believe will be the promising areas for future research.
