Description
Through their design efforts healthcare architects and engineers can have a significant influence on the prevention of infection in healthcare environments. Increasingly research is showing that the built environment is a major factor in infection control, but while the design of the healthcare facility is an important consideration in the creation of healthy environments there are practical limits to the influence that design alone can have. Infection control professionals, design professionals and healthcare administrators should become knowledgeable about how to work closely together and incorporate healthy design principles into their facilities, whether it is a new facility or simply a renovation or remodeling project. The presenter will acquaint participants with the latest research findings on how design can influence infection control.;Objectives: • Understand how research on infections in healthcare facilities can suggest design techniques to enhance infection prevention and control strategies. • Recognize the healthcare facility design process that includes infection preventionists in the creation of a safer healthcare environment • Explore research frontiers where important discoveries in how design can influence infection prevention and control are yet to be made
