David Robertson has been at Syracuse for six years. His area of expertise is data mining with a strong interest in forecasting and predictive modeling. He has presented at APRA and CASE conferences throughout the U.S. and Canada. Robertson holds a bachelor’s degree and MBA from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, where he teaches as an adjunct professor. He is currently a doctorial student in the social science program at the Syracuse University’s Maxwell School. His research interest is philanthropy, looking specifically at the philanthropic activities of disenfranchised or marginalized members of society. His research will bring to light the unrecognized, undocumented and informal contributions of these individuals.

Description
The session will explore the basics of data mining. Speakers will look at sample databases and examine the tools available on the desktop to extract the stories hidden within the data. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of the basic concepts of data mining and data modeling. Data mining tools such as data filters, pivot tables, formulas for database enhancement and descriptive statistics will be demonstrated.
