David Eberly, Director, Prospect Development, Children's Hospital Trust
During his more than 25 years in fundraising, David Eberly has divided his time between higher education and health care. He served as Director of Prospect Research at Tufts University, Director of Development Services at Harvard Medical School and Director of Resource Development at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government before returning to the research field at Children’s Hospital Boston in 2003. Eberly has consulted for numerous institutions in higher education, health and other member organizations. He is a member of the APRA Board and editor of Connections. A past President of the New England Development Research Association (NEDRA), he is a recipient of its Ann Castle Award.
Steve Knight has worked in advancement research for over eight years. He is currently the Assistant Director of Research, Strategic Initiatives at the University of Florida Foundation directing research efforts for corporate and foundation development projects. He was formerly Assistant Director of Research at the University of South Florida Foundation, and Information Analysis Manager at the American Cancer Society, Florida Division. Steve currently serves on the APRA International Ethics Committee. He was Volunteer Co-Chair for the APRA International Conference in both 2006 and 2007, and served as president of APRA-FL from 2006 to 2008.
Description
This session will discuss basic concepts of ethics as it relates to advancement research and fundraising in general. Particular focus will center upon the APRA International Statement of Ethics and the challenges researchers face in managing highly confidential information as a part of professional duties. The panelists will present anecdotal ethical situations and strategies for how researchers can resolve ethical problems. Discussion will also be made of what issues fall into legal classifications versus purely ethical.
