With nearly 30 years experience designing medical facilities for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, R. Douglas Parriss approach to design is steeped in the creation of healthcare environments that serve our nations heroes. As Managing Partner of Studio NOVA, he leads a comprehensive project team and guides collaborative efforts in the successful delivery of a state-of-the-art medical center that reflects the high standards of care that veterans deserve.
The forthcoming Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System Replacement Medical Center (SLVHCS) project is characterized by innovation, flexibility, and operational excellence. The project will be the VAs first to utilize Building Information Modeling, a collaborative platform that involves all stakeholders at the onsetinstead of subsequent phasesto inform better decision making, increase efficiency and create a stronger design. The project will also be designed to meet advanced sustainability standards, emergency preparedness guidelines, and accommodate state-of-the-art medical systems. Most importantly, the new medical facility will serve as a model of veteran-focused healthcare of the future.
In addition to the SLVHCS, Mr. Parris has worked on VA projects such as the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center in Columbus, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center Replacement Hospital in Dayton.
Mr. Parris has had an integral role on some of NBBJs most celebrated healthcare and research projects including The Cleveland Clinics Miller Pavilion, a new tower for the nations top-ranked heart hospital, and The Arthur G. James Cancer Center at The Ohio State University, an advanced clinical and research facility for the nations largest university. His work with Nationwide Childrens Hospital helped the institution achieve its goal of becoming a nationally recognized leader in pediatric research.
Within the design industry, Mr. Parriss expertise is highly-regarded and he has spoken at conferences such as the AIA Ohio Convention, Future of Professional Practice Conference, and the DBIA/COAA Healthcare Project Delivery Conference. His work has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects, and featured in numerous publications. Mr. Parris holds a Bachelors and Masters of Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
