Description
This case study presentation examines how workers responded when they noticed smoke and then flames coming from a transformer near their hospital’s emergency department entrance. Facility and engineering staff worked with emergency services and the local utility to secure the facility and to ensure the safety of patients and the building. They then developed a plan to address upgrades to their mechanical and electrical equipment systems through energy- and performance-based strategies. This session will enable you to—
• Develop strategies that can be employed to prioritize electrical equipment upgrades and enhance emergency preparedness.
• Explain how to prepare for and implement campus-wide normal power electrical shutdowns without adversely affecting clinical operations.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Analyze payback periods and research the availability of grants and incentives in performance-based infrastructure projects
  • Build collaboration across various departments and the local utility organization throughout the energy, electrical and infrastructure upgrade project.
  • Create strategies for and the prioritization of electrical equipment upgrades to enhance the level of emergency preparedness.
  • Properly prepare for and implement campus wide normal power electrical shutdowns without adversely impacting the clinical operations.
