Description
The health care construction industry has put significant emphasis on the proper management of indoor air quality during construction and renovation projects. Although most concern has been focused on dust-producing activities related to renovation projects inside actively functioning hospitals, new construction adjacent to hospital buildings can pose even greater risks to patient safety. This case study examines how St. Josephs Regional Medical Center in Paterson, N.J., successfully integrated a multifaceted infection control risk assessment (ICRA) process during the construction of a $250 million expansion project on the campus of its acute care facility. This session will enable you to—
• Identify critical areas of the hospital exposed to potential airborne particulate risk.
• Discuss the role HVAC systems serve in a comprehensive and successful ICRA program.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Ascertain Owner direct labor and dollar costs, as well as construction costs related to a successful ICRA program early in the project planning.
  • Conduct regular meetings with ICRA, site safety, insurance and regulatory compliance issues collectively discussed during planning, design and construction of the project as part of the project teams overall Risk Management process.
  • Determine schedule and estimate the costs of the most appropriate building demolition and site excavation means and methods to prevent dust migration to protect ongoing hospital care.
  • Identify the critical areas of the hospital exposed to potential airborne particulate risk, as understanding the existing building HVAC systems serving these suites is paramount to a comprehensive and successful ICRA program.
