LEARNER OUTCOMES:
- Compare and contrast safety and efficacy of prescription agents for treatment of osteoporosis including oral and intravenous bisphosphonates, teripiratide, miacalcin, and selective estrogen receptor modulators.
- Describe innovative practice models for providing medication therapy management for patients with osteoporosis.
- Design a therapeutic plan to meet an individual patient's needs for calcium and vitamin D utilizing dietary changes and over-the-counter products.
- Discuss clinical controversies in osteoporosis care including prevention of osteonecrosis of the jaw caused by bisphosphonates as well as the relationship between calcium supplements and heart disease.
- Interpret bone densitometry results appropriately and classify bone mineral density based upon World Health Organization standards.
