LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Analyze the role of medication monitoring and how it can be used to optimize medication therapy.
  • Assess the role of hospital guidelines for the management of therapeutic hypothermia as well as the challenges of incorporating the guidelines into clinical practice.
  • Evaluate various treatment modalities, as well as the alterations in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of medications, that occur with cooling and re-warming.
  • Formulate a patient specific therapeutic plan following resuscitation from cardiac arrest.
  • Summarize the rationale for induced hypothermia, the pertinent published literature, and the pathophysiology behind the potential neuroprotective effects post-resuscitation.
