Keynote: George N. Miller, Jr., BS, MHSA

George N. Miller, Jr. was the 2007 President of the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) and served as a member of its Board for 6 years. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the American Hospital Association (AHA) from 2004‐2006; The Joint Commission as a Commissioner from 2000‐2004; the Board of Directors of the Texas Hospital Association,1999‐2001; and the Board of Directors of the Texas Organization of Rural and Community Hospitals from 1998‐2001.

Mr. Miller was recently reappointed by President Obama to serve his third consecutive 3 year term on MedPAC (the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission) that makes recommendations to Congress on healthcare policy and payments to America’s healthcare providers. Mr. Miller has over 29 years experience in healthcare‐related administrative, financial, management and consulting fields. Currently, Mr. Miller serves as the Chief Operating Officer of ProNex, Inc., a company that develops, markets, and maintains web‐enabled software solutions for health professionals and their patients or clients.

  • Describe how pharmacists can leverage support for safety net hospitals and influence support of the 340-B Improvement Act of 2011.
  • Describe the healthcare access and quality issues that face rural America.
  • Describe the history and role of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), its statutory mandate and policy influence, and implications for rural advocacy.
  • List ways pharmacists should structure ruralresearch and demonstration projects that show pharmacists' value and make the case for CMS' restoration of funding for specialty pharmacy residencies.
  • Name pharmacists' opportunities in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act through accountable care organizations.
