Description
It can be challenging dosing a critically-ill patient who has numerous issues and countless medications on board; it can be even more complicated when that patient is obese. This session will explore the nuances of dosing both adult and pediatric obese patients in critical settings where dosing information is often not available.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Appropriately dose beta-lactam antimicrobials in obese patients.
  • Describe a process for determining the initial dosing regimen for an adult obese patient when limited dosing information is not available in the usual product information brochures.
  • Describe a process for determining the initial dosing regimen in a pediatric obese patient when limited dosing information is not available in the usual product information brochures.
  • Discuss the dosing of heparin and low molecular weight heparins in obese patients.
  • Discuss the limitations of using adjusted body weight calculations for drug dosing in obese patients.
