Description
The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has been working on updating hypertension and dyslipidemia guidelines for several years. At long last, the JNC 8 and ATP 4 guidelines are due to be released in 2012. These new guidelines are designed to be an evidence based consensus document that should assist clinicians in treating patients with these common chronic diseases. The overall intent of these guidelines is to improve patient care. However, with new guidelines and recommendations come new challenges. Clinicians must be able to incorporate these guideline recommendations into their routine patient care activities if the overall intent of these documents is to be met. This session will review potential new changes to these guidelines based on newer evidence.

  • Discuss at least two current clinical controversies related to the treatment of hypertension and dyslipidemia.
  • Identify evidence based changes that might be seen in the new JNC 8 and ATP IV guidelines.
  • Review evidence that supports changes in these current recommendations.
  • Summarize recommendations from current JNC 7 and ATP III guidelines.
