Description
Computer-based clinical decision support (CDS) -- defined as the process for enhancing health-related decision and actions with pertinent, organized clinical knowledge and patients’ information -- is an important technology that can improve healthcare delivery and health outcomes. There are multiple types of computer-based CDS used within multiple work processes, clinical decision types and kinds of environments within healthcare systems. Designing, building and testing any of these CDS types requires significant effort and expertise. If we as a nation are going to advance the use of CDS in a cost-effective way, we need to aggregate ideas and resources. There are many programs going on at local levels, within professional groups, within vendor groups and at the national level to identify key processes and methods to support CDS design and to make CDS implementation more efficient and effective. Brian Dixon, who leads the implementation of CDSC services at the Regenstrief Institute Center for Biomedical Informatics and Dr. Robert Jenders, co-chair for CDS in standards development organization Health Level Seven who has co-authored an award-winning book regarding the implementation of CDS, will discuss the current state of CDS on a national level and activities that will help advance it.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Describe the current state of clinical decision support (CDS) on a national level, including achievements by key working groups.
  • Describe the details of standards that are used to implement CDS.
  • Describe the implications to pharmacy of key national CDS efforts.
  • Explain the role of standards development organizations in facilitating CDS.
  • List specific ongoing challenges that can prevent easy implementation of CDS.
