LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Determine the appropriate indications, optimal route, and optimal timing of initiation of preoperative specialized nutrition support (SNS) in surgical patients.
  • Describe the etiology and risk factors for hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia in critically ill patients receiving SNS.
  • Describe electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities that are observed in critically ill patients receiving SNS, as well as appropriate steps for prevention, treatment, and monitoring of such disorders.
  • Identify specific nutritional considerations and requirements, as well as appropriate changes to the nutrition prescription in patients receiving SNS who are receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).
  • List appropriate treatments and monitoring parameters for both hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia in critically ill patients receiving SNS.
