Description
Pre-registration required; onsite registration is not available. This workshop will prepare residency program directors and preceptors to meet the requirements for a systems-based approach to the design, delivery, and evaluation of training specified in the 2005 ASHP Accreditation Standard for Postgraduate year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Programs and the ASHP Accreditation Standard for Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Pharmacy Residency Programs through use of the Residency Learning System (RLS). The 2001 version of the RLS model has been modified to meet the new standards' requirements and take into account the decade of program experience with use of the RLS as a tool to enhance the quality of existing and start-up programs. Pre-reading will prepare attendees to participate in a simulation of the design of a program using "The Next Generation RLS" as a guide. The workshop includes practical, hands-on experience in applying direct observation to assess resident performance. It will also help develop skills for making and recording criteria-based judgments. Emphasis will be placed on providing written feedback that enhances resident learning and provides helpful documentation of resident progress for program directors and others on the residency preceptor team.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Explain the benefits of approaching the design, delivery, and evaluation of residency training systematically.
  • Apply the steps of a systems-based decision process to the design, delivery, and evaluation of the residency program.
  • Apply strategies for involving all program preceptors in a team approach to building residents' skills.
  • Compare and contrast the value of written and verbal assessments.
  • Document assessments using a format that facilitates clear communication of performance.
