Program Code: 131-L01
Date: Wednesday, June 27, 2007
Time: 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM

SPEAKER:
Bruce A. Berger, MS, PhD, Professor and Head, Pharmacy Care Systems, Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy, Auburn, AL
Description
Managing an illness requires difficult changes in behavior and lifestyle; each year, millions of people suffer from drug-related morbidity and mortality as a result of nonadherence with prescription medication regimens. Although it is the patient (not healthcare providers) who must develop effective coping strategies and become self-regulated, skillful and sensitive health-care providers can greatly assist patients in the process of behavior change. Motivational Interviewing, a very specific and validated method for accomplishing this, will be taught and demonstrated. This approach to dealing with resistance and assisting patients in moving through stages of change will revisit nonadherence with an emphasis on motivation.
