Theodore Passineau has worked in the field of medical professional liability since 1987. During that time he has been a medical malpractice defense attorney, Risk Management Consultant, Director of Risk Management and Director of Continuing Medical Education. Mr. Passineau's credentials include a JD, a certificate in Healthcare Risk Management, designation as a Registered Professional Liability Underwriter, his CPHRM, and he is a Fellow of ASHRM. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. Mr. Passineau is currently a Senior Clinical Risk Management Consultant with The Medical Protective Company.

Description
This session discusses the concept of statistical risk of loss, including how it is calculated by professional liability insurance companies. How that risk of loss increases when the provider is sued for malpractice for the first time, focusing on the personal dynamics associated with involvement in malpractice litigation, also is described. The session concludes with suggestions for coping with malpractice litigation stress.
