Thomas Utech, PharmD is the Director of Product Management and Marketing for CareFusion. Previously, he served as Assistant Director of Pharmacy for University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. He is a graduate of Creighton University College of Pharamcy and completed a residency at University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Dr. Utech has developed dashboards and metrics for professional and administrative personnel concerning medication and automation for its optimal use. He is a frequent presenter to nursing and pharmacy audiences concerning medication diversion and safety issues.

Description
Though all medications have some risk, focusing on a small Focusing on a small group of medications known to commonly cause harm can allow an organization to make significant improvements in patient safety. This session goes through the steps to reduce the risk of harmful patient events caused by high-alert medications. During this presentation, participants can develop an action plan that will include all steps of the medication process – selection, storage, ordering, dispensing, administering and monitoring – which can be used as a template to improve organizational performance.
