Sheila K. Nicholson is a Partner with the law firm of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer and works out of their Tampa office. She has been involved in the long-term care/health-care industry for over 25 years. Beginning as a Physical Therapist she returned to law school in 2000 and now works in the industry as defense counsel. She has lectured locally and nationally on legal documentation, medical malpractice and risk management. She has published many articles on the same topics. In October 2007, Jones & Bartlett published her book, The Physical Therapist's Business Practice and Legal Guide.
Description
This session examines how plaintiff’s lawyers review medical records and formulate liability theories in negligence/residents’ rights claims. Different pieces of medical record documentation are examined to identify how it assists the plaintiff’s lawyer in formulating a case and how it helps establish the value of a case. Suggestions are offered on how to train staff to mitigate these exposures.
