Kathy Connolly is Principal of Womens Services for Premier Consulting Solutions and is the project manager for the Premier Perinatal Safety Initiative. Prior to this position Ms. Connolly worked for almost 20 years as a risk management consultant, most recently as AVP of Risk Management with Premier Insurance Management Services and with PHICO prior to joining Premier. Ms. Connolly worked integrally with IHI & Ascension Health on the 2005 Idealized Design of Perinatal Care, an innovation project based on the principles of reliability
science and the IHI's model for applying these principles
to improve care.

Gwen Stokes, BSN, MPH, CPHQ, CPHRM, Asst. Vice President - Risk Management, Premier Insurance Management Services
Ms. Stokes is Asst. Vice President of Risk Management with Premier Insurance Management Services. Prior to joining Premier in 2007 Ms. Stokes served as Vice President of Risk Management for McNeary and has worked in the field of risk management for 15 years. She is a registered nurse with diverse clinical & administrative experience including work in labor and delivery, medical surgical nursing and intensive care. She has spoken on the topic of Perinatal Patient Safety for the NCASHRM chapter and has published a number of articles addressing current risk management and patient safety topics.
Description
In 2008, 16 hospitals joined the Premier Perinatal Safety Initiative and implemented processes to improve communication between nurses and physicians, enhance clinical teamwork, practice clinical emergencies and standardize protocols for induction and augmentation and vacuum and forceps application. This session lists components of the initiative, including baseline high reliability measurements and the impact these efforts have had in reducing birth-related injuries.
