Fran O'Connell has worked in the insurance industry for over 25 years. As Vice President-Medical Professional Liability at Markel Shand, a subsidiary of the highly regarded Markel Corporation, Fran has responsibility for underwriting physicians, hospitals, managed care organizations and a wide variety of allied health risks. She is a published author and frequent national lecturer on a variety of underwriting topics. She is also a Registered Nurse, licensed in IL. Fran received her BA, MBA and BSN degrees from Northwestern University.
James Kjar, Esq., Partner, Reback, McAndrews & Kjar
James J. Kjar is a senior partner in the Law Firm of Reback, McAndrews & Kjar, located in Manhattan Beach, California. He has concentrated his practice for the past 18 years in the defense of civil injury cases, particularly medical malpractice. Mr. Kjar has written and lectured extensively in the areas of trial tactics and techniques as well as medical risk management issues. Mr. Kjar has served on the board of directors of the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel and is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Kathleen F. Johnson, Esq. Kathy is a Senior Claims Attorney with Markel Shand, Inc., which writes professional liability insurance coverage for physicians and other healthcare practitioners and entities. She received her undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Richmond and her law degree from the College of William and Mary. After being in private practice for several years defending healthcare providers in civil cases as well as before regulatory boards, she has spent the past 17 years as in-house counsel to insurance companies, managing medical malpractice litigation nationwide.
