Karen Zimmer, M.D., MPH, Clinical Director, ECRI Institute
Dr. Zimmer is Clinical Director of ECRI Institute PSO and is an assistant professor of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University. Before joining ECRI Institute in 2007 she led the implementation of the first weight-based, electronic, narcotic prescription writing application in the Johns Hopkins Children's Center to help reduce the number of medical errors. Other patient safety projects included designing a rapid response team form and database for ongoing monitoring and work on structured clinical observations of pediatric residents. Dr. Zimmer has a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is board certified in Pediatrics.
Amy Goldberg-Alberts is a Program Director at ECRI Institute and has been involved in development and operations of ECRI Institute PSO, its risk assessment programs, as well as other risk management, quality, and patient safety programs and intiatives of ECRI Institute over the last 20 years. Ms. Goldberg-Alberts has provided guidance to healthcare risk managers and patient safety officers on issues pertaining to hospitals, health systems, long-term care and other aging services, and ambulatory facilities. Prior to joining ECRI Institute Ms. Goldberg-Alberts held various positions at children's hospitals and hospital associations.
Description
Final regulations implementing the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 were published nearly one year ago along with listing of the first federally certified PSOs. This session gives an update on PSOs, the challenges and successes for these new entities, considerations for hospitals and health systems participating with PSOs, lessons learned and the value of sharing patient safety information with PSOs.
