Stephen Pavkovic, RN, MPH, JD, Risk Manager, Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Stephen Pavkovic brings a diverse healthcare background to his current roles as a Risk Manager at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. While working as an operating room nurse and a manger he earned advanced degrees in public health and law. He then practiced law as an associate for a Chicago firm defending catastrophic medical malpractice claims and as a States Attorney for the Cook County Bureau of Health Services. At Northwestern, he applies active risk management strategies to identify patient safety opportunities and prevent losses. He remains professionally active with several national publications and presentations.
Ms. Wade is a medical malpractice defense attorney with approximately 10 years of experience defending the interests of healthcare providers in one of the most litigious jurisdictions in the country. She works closely with risk managers and claims directors to investigate pending claims and identify opportunities to avoid future exposure. She also advises her clients on legal rules and regulatory changes affecting risk management practices. She believes outside counsel should be more than part of the response team, but part of the proactive solution to risk reduction.
Description
Produce incident reports relating to medication errors from the last five years? Provide patient grievance reports involving pressure sores from the last decade? Where would you begin to respond? Does your facility have a document retention and destruction plan that allows you to comply with your jurisdiction’s requirements? As plaintiff’s attorneys become more sophisticated in obtaining internal risk management documents, protection from immobilizing document requests becomes more important. This session examines ABA and ARMA best practices to assist in establishing a systematic file maintenance process to reduce the risks associated with exposing your files.
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Develop a checklist of considerations for implementing an effective file management plan.
Identify potential avenues of exposure through inadequate file management practices.
Survey privileges and laws applicable to file creation, retention and discovery in litigation.
