Kim McCoy is the System Director of Organizational Risk Management at Spectrum Health, Grand Rapids, MI. She has 27 years of experience in healthcare. Her career in Quality/Risk Management began in 1994. She has a BSN from Ferris State University and is currently a MSA candidate at Central Michigan University. She received her Healthcare Risk Management certificate from MMI Companies in conjunction with Finch University of Health Sciences in 1999. She is a member of ASHRM and MSHRM (Michigan Chapter). She is a past president of MSHRM and a R. Paul Venzke Award for Outstanding Achievement in Risk Management recipient.
Kathleen Kinsman, System Manager of Enterprise Risk and Insurance, Spectrum Health
Kathy Kinsman is the manager of Risk and Insurance at Spectrum Health and began her career in Risk Management in 1995. She has a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Central Michigan University. Kathy's experience in Risk Management includes workers compensation administration, non-clinical risk management, insurance administration, aviation risk management, safety, contract management, enterprise risk management and claims management. Kathy has prior work experience in legal, manufacturing and accounting settings. She is certified in Health Care Compliance and is a member of the Risk and Insurance Management Society. Linda Hines, RN, JD, CPHRM, Risk Manager/General Counsel, MedFlight
Linda received a BSN from The Ohio State University where her nursing career involved critical/trauma care, cardiac/cardiac catheterization lab care and clinical research experience. She received a Juris Doctor from Capital University Law School. After obtaining her JD she worked at Mount Carmel Health System, Columbus, Ohio as a Risk Manager and Associate Staff Attorney. During her time as Risk Manager she was responsible for risk management services for the health systems transportation services.
Linda currently is the Risk Manager/General Counsel at MedFlight in Columbus, Ohio. MedFlight provides critical care transportation both air and ground throughout Ohio and neighboring states.
Description
This session reviews operational models for air medical programs and reviews accident rates and governmental oversight/recommendations. Hot topics include helicopter shopping/weather turndown with discussion of the hospital’s role in this safety concern, as well as patient safety and standardization of processes and equipment, post-accident incident plan drills, regulatory issues and risk management strategies involving insurance and contract review.
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Achieve an understanding of helicopter shopping and weather turndown in air medical services.
Develope scenarios to test the PAIP plan at a hospital involing an air medical diaster or event.
Foster effective education of all users regarding the risks and benefits of air medical services.
