With increased attention from groups ranging from the Joint Commission to the American College of Healthcare Executives, conflict management has become a key competency for healthcare leaders. By applying transformative mediation skills, risk managers can help overcome challenges as varied as disruptive clinicians, patients with poor outcomes, and the interdepartmental and interpersonal disagreements that hijack meetings or hinder good care.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Define transformative conflict management and describe basic characteristics of the process.
  • Formulate approaches to conflict that foster empowerment and recognition in the parties.
  • Reflect the transformative approach to conflict in dealing with colleagues, patients and physicians.
