Description
Despite considerable evidence indicating that health information technology can prevent medical errors, little is known about the relationship between EMR adoption in the office practice setting and medical malpractice claims. The use of the EMR may lead to fewer diagnostic errors, improved follow-up of abnormal test results, better guideline adherence and fewer adverse clinical events --- all common allegations for medmal claims.

This presentation will examine the results of a survey of physician office practices in California, reviewing the level of EMR adoption correlated with specific physician and practice characteristics. Risks associated with the EMR will also be reviewed.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Analyze the correlation of the use of an EMR to the frequency of medical malpractice claims
  • Describe four common risks in the use of the "hybrid" documentation process (electronic/paper)
  • Discuss risks associated with the use of the EMR
