Meg Garrett is a graduate of Villanova University with a BSN-She has a Masters degree in counseling and a law degree from the University of Maryland. She was a Navy Nurse and has been Senior Counsel for the Johns Hopkins Health System for 24 years.In addition,she has been the Director of Risk Management for the past 5 years. She is responsible for the risk programs for 4 hospitals including an academic medical center,home care,long term care,ambulatory practices and over 5000 doctors.She has been active with Maryland legislation.She teaches classes in the Hopkins Nursing Program and Medical School

Lauree Barreca has over 25 years experience in managing healthcare litigation. She is a Registered Nurse who received her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law. While a partner at the law firm of OHagan, Smith and Amundsen in Chicago she represented both healthcare systems and individual physicians. As the AVP of Claims at MMI Companies, a Healthcare Risk Management firm, she was responsible for the Claims and Risk issues for their clients. She is currently the Managing Attorney, Claims and Litigation at The Johns Hopkins Health System.
Description
Hospitals once considered safe havens must today deal with the reality that violence can occur anywhere. As part of the organizations Enterprise Risk Management program the Risk Manager must ensure that the organization has the necessary protections in place. Last September Johns Hopkins Hospital experienced workplace violence at its worst when an armed gunman injured and killed people on the floor. The immediate responses of the clinicians, security, facilities and patients have been analyzed and assessed. This in-depth analysis revealed the strengths and weaknesses of the plan that was in place. We would like to share our experiences with you.
