Larry Smith, J.D., Vice President, Risk Management Services, MedStar Health
Larry Smith is Vice President of Risk Management Services for MedStar Health. He leads the design, implementation and administration of MedStar Healths comprehensive risk management, self-insurance and commercial insurance programs. Larrys career tenure includes risk management executive roles at two other major university hospital systems in California and Boston. In 2005 he received a Maryland Hospital Association award for his work to promote medical malpractice reform and the John Benjamin Nichols Award for his contributions toward improving the health of the Washington, D.C. community. Larry is a frequent speaker on risk management topics for healthcare, underwriting and captive insurer audiences.
Dale Schultz, VP Business Health/Risk Management, Banner Health
Dale is the VP of Business Health and Risk Management at Banner Health where he is responsible for insurance, claims administration and SIR litigation management for professional liability and workers compensation, security, records management, HIPAA and occupational health. He has over 30 years experience in risk and quality management related positions both in the healthcare and insurance industry. While Dale has held numerous leadership roles for major healthcare systems, professional liability, off shore captives and health insurance companies, he has continued to be a beacon for patient safety throughout his career through his work and volunteer contributions to the field.
Paul Greve, JD RPLU DFASHRM, Executive Vice President, Willis HRH Health Care Practice
Paul Greve is Executive Vice President in the Willis Health Care Practice. He monitors national medical malpractice claims and insurance trends and consults with Willis clients. Paul has 20 years experience in major Ohio hospitals including risk management and general counsel. He has 15 years experience in the malpractice insurance industry including employment by Medical Protective. Paul has authored articles in numerous insurance, legal, and medical publications as well as medical textbooks on risk management and medical-legal topics.Paul holds a Juris Doctor degree and is a Registered Professional Liability Underwriter. He is a Distinguished Fellow of ASHRM.
Nat Cross, Healthcare Focus Group Leader, Beazley Group PLC
Nat is the Healthcare Focus Group Leader for Beazley Group PLC, one of the largest Lloyd's Managing Agencies as well as Beazley Insurance Company, a P&C carrier licensed in all 50 U.S. states.
He joined Beazley in 2003 having spent the prior 12 years at SVB Syndicate. His Beazley healthcare team consists of 6 underwriters and 3 attorney claims managers. Nat oversees $100MM of med mal premium and has $30MM of single placement capacity.
Nat has an honors degree in Mathematics from London University and holds the Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute designation.
Dorothy is an experienced clinician, leader, and nationally recognized expert in healthcare risk management and patient safety. She has a decade of nursing experience, and over 20 years of experience in risk management. Dorothy has been the Vice President of Risk Management and Patient Safety at PeriGen since 2005. Prior to joining PeriGen, Dorothy held management positions with several leading national professional liability carriers. Dorothy is a DFASHRM , a former ASHRM Board Member and is CPHRM and Six Sigma certified.
Description
This session is a panel presentation to provide multiple perspectives on the bold actions needed to materially reduce risk in a reticent area such as OB liability. Commitment from key stakeholders (Clinical, Risk Mgt, Financial, and Insurance)are essential to success. The national OB risk management problem will be discussed along with case studies from two Senior Risk Management executives who took risks to employ innovative tranformational change to attack the status quo of OB risks. The panel will also discuss measureable results to date, future plans for further innovation and the importance of insurance partnerships.
