Marilyn Owens has been involved in healthcare risk management for over 20 years. She has worked in academic, hospital, and insurance company positions, and has been responsible for insurance, claims, information systems, and loss prevention. Over the past several years, as Director, Risk Management for Cassatt RRG Holding Company, she has focused on loss prevention and patient safety. In her current position, she oversees the company's risk management activities, including risk assessments, loss prevention initiatives, and education.

Kathleen Shostek consults with healthcare facilities on a broad range of clinical risk management and patient safety topics; she contributed to the development of ECRIs Radiology Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ),a comprehensive tool designed to help risk managers, radiologists, and radiology departments ensure the safety and security of patients, employees, and equipment and aid in developing policies and procedures that comply with federal regulations; including specific questions related to mammography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Kathleen performed the on-site hospital and outpatient radiology risk assessments and coordinated the ECRI Institute survey team for the Cassatt RRG radiology risk assessment project.

Carli Meister,

The Chester County Hospital
Carli Meister has been an RN for 30 years and has held a wide variety of administrative and clinical positions in the fields of psychiatric/HIV nursing, Organizational Development, Performance Improvement and in Risk and Customer Relations. At The Chester County Hospital, Ms. Meister is responsible for a wide variety of activities; some of which include resolving patient grievances, facilitating educational opportunities for nurses and physicians around loss prevention, and spearheading targeted clinical risk initiatives (e.g. in Radiology). She has authored numerous articles, and presented at national and international conferences, including most recently at ASHRM in 2009.

Amy Goldberg-Alberts is a Program Director at ECRI Institute and has been involved in development and operations of ECRI Institute PSO, its risk assessment programs, as well as other risk management, quality, and patient safety programs and intiatives of ECRI Institute over the last 20 years. Ms. Goldberg-Alberts has provided guidance to healthcare risk managers and patient safety officers on issues pertaining to hospitals, health systems, long-term care and other aging services, and ambulatory facilities. Prior to joining ECRI Institute Ms. Goldberg-Alberts held various positions at children's hospitals and hospital associations.

Description
Radiation safety has been put in the spotlight by regulators, The Joint Commission, patient safety organizations, and others. Excessive radiation doses, burns, and other skin injuries, are the subject of investigations and highlighted by the media. Numerous concerns impact patient safety and increase liability including breakdowns in communication of test results and during patient handoffs, credentialing and proficiency, and set up, use, and monitoring of imaging technologies. This session describes techniques for identifying potential risk issues in this critical area.
