Dr. Victor Klein is a practicing Perinatologist and Director of Patient Safety and Risk Reduction-Obstetrics & Gynecology in the North Shore -LIJ Health System. He has been involved in risk management for the past twenty years. He is Board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Medical Genetics. Currently he is an MBA student in Quality Management. He works for the Attorney General and OPMC of NY as a peer reviewer. Dr. Klein is on the Perinatal Advisory Board of the Greater New York Hospital Association as well as the ACOG District 2 Patient Safety & Quality Improvement Committee.

Description
This session will review patient safety issues in obstetrical care. Specific techniques and strategic planning to improve patient safety and reduce risk will be highlighted. Documentation tools, risk reduction techniques that have been implemented at the North Shore LIJ Health system in the Obstetrical service will be discussed. Methods to ensure better patient outcomes by improved communication, documentation, enhanced privacy, and staff education will be outlined. Mechanisms to integrate liability reduction with quality and patient safety initiatives will be presented. The dashboard for obstetrical performance improvement will be reviewed. Patient scenarios will be used to illustrate these principles.
