David Young with La Cava & Jacobson, P.A., a civil defense law firm dedicated to representing, insurance companies and those whom they insure. The firm handles litigation and appeals in all Florida state and federal courts. He previously practiced with Stephens, Lynn, Klein, La Cava & Puya for ten years, as a partner in the Tampa office. His practice focuses on the defense of physicians in medical malpractice / licensing issues. He graduated from Stetson University with degrees in Business and Marketing, from University of Florida with a graduate degree in literature, and earned his JD from UF.
Susan Robinson, RN, BSN, CPHRM, Regional Claims and Loss Prevention Manager, CHRISTUS Health
Susan Robinson joined CHRISTUS Health as the Regional Claims and Loss Prevention Manager in December 2010. She was previously with Memorial Hermann Healthcare System as a Facility Risk Manager and later, Director of Clinical Risk Management. After graduating from Lamar University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she began her nursing career at CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, Texas. Following years of Cardiac Nursing, she transitioned into the Risk Management Department at CHRISTUS in 2001 and has remained in the field since. She has been a Member of GHSHRM and ASHRM since 2004.

Amanda Mount, RN, JD, CPHRM joined Willis as the Houston Healthcare Practice Leader in January 2011. She was previously with Western Litigation and managed claims for a national physician group, prior to that she was with The Methodist Hospital in the risk and claims management department. Prior to law school she worked as an emergency room nurse. Amanda has been a member of GHSHRM since 2005. She served on the education committee since joining, has served on the board, and is currently serving as President. She has also participated in ASHRM task forces and the leadership committee.
Description
This presentation will discuss different methods of cutting defense costs. We will start with internal risk management techniques which will be described by Susan Robinson, an experienced hospital risk manager. Amanda Mount will then explain in detail techjnickes learned from her experience as a claims manger how to decrease defense costs once counsel is retained. David Young, an experienced medical malpractice attorney, will discuss methods used by counsel to conserve costs when litigating a case.
