John Edwards, MD, is a physician practicing and Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Vincents Womens and Childrens Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Edwards is also a member of the Henderson and Walton Womens Center, PC. He received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and performed his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Edwards serves as a board member of the Medical Executive Committee at St. Vincents Hospital and is a member of multiple medical societies.

Jane L. Gale, BSN, MA, CPHRM is Director of Risk Management for Ascension Health, the largest Catholic and not-for-profit healthcare provider in the US. She is responsible for leading clinical loss prevention activities, including Fast Track, the organizations early claim resolution program. She received her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Madonna University and an MA in Healthcare Administration from Siena Heights University, both in Michigan. Ms. Gale has been an ASHRM member for 20 years and is also a member and Past President of the Michigan Society of Healthcare Risk Management.

Obstacles to full disclosure of unanticipated medical events to patients persist, despite widespread acceptance that disclosure is both the right thing to do and what patients expect. Aligning the interests of the hospital, medical staff and patient poses a challenge. This presentation will feature one health systems experience in partnering with independent physicians and a major professional liability carrier to implement a disclosure and early resolution program. This experience will be illustrated in video and discussed by a diverse panel consisting of a health system risk manager, an obstetrician and an insurance company representative.
