Dr. Bitterman practiced emergency medicine for over 30 years. Currently, he runs a healthcare law and consulting firm based in Harbor Springs, MI, specializing in the federal laws governing hospital based emergency services (EMTALA), emergency medicine risk management, liability/insurance issues, and regulatory compliance issues. He is Chairman of the Board of Governors of 'EPIC' - Emergency Physicians Insurance Company, a medical liability insurance carrier chartered in Nevada. He is also currently chairman of ACEP's Medical Legal Committee. Dr. Bitterman writes and speaks extensively on EM and hospital risk management issues.

Description
This course will examine the higher incidence of adverse outcomes and associated liability related to delay of care for patients presenting to the hospital emergency eepartment, both for delay in receiving examination or treatment in the ED and delay in access to the inpatient setting and services. Issues related to triage, crowding, boarding, failure to follow hospital policy and procedure, handoffs between physicians, the role of mid-level providers, delay in evaluating EMS patients, and liability for patients who leave will be addressed. This course will change the delivery of emergency services in your hospital and improve patient safety.
