Bruce L. Adelson, former Senior Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, will give participants his unique insights into how the federal government enforces the language assistance mandates of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Bruce will explain the steps health care providers should take to avoid federal oversight concerning Title VI. Bruce will also discuss the connection between Title VI and medical malpractice and will outline the policies health care providers can implement to lower their risk of losing lawsuits alleging Title VI damages for national origin discrimination and related claims for no informed consent and medical malpractice.

Linda K. Larkin, RN, BSN, CPHRM, is a Risk Manager for Memorial Health System in Colorado Springs, CO, which consists of two hospitals with a total of 671 beds, and multiple off-site outpatient locations. Linda has experience in various clinical settings which gives her good insight into areas of potential exposures related to civil rights violations. Linda will review a recent experience involving a federal investigation of her organization, as well as a legal case related to interpreters and informed consent which cost her organization $1M.
