PROTEIN METABOLISM IN THE STRESSED PATIENT: A.S.P.E.N.- ESPEN SYMPOSIUM
Track : Feburary 9, 2010
Program Code: T41
SPEAKER (S):
Yves Boirie, MD
Pierre Dechelotte, MD, PhD
Robert Martindale, MD, PhD, Medical Director of Hospital Nutrition Services, Department of Surgery, Oregon Health and Science University, Portland, OR
Description
"Metabolic responses to stress can bring an array of health conditions
which can be detrimental to the critically ill patient. Stress triggers
rapid, massive protein losses. This session will highlight a range of
topics that are vital to protein metabolism, including nutritional
modulation of intestinal protein metabolism. Faculty will also determine
whether the role of fat in muscle protein metabolism for the
patient with a chronic disease is beneficial or catastrophic, examine
nutritional modulation of intestinal protein metabolism and explore
which nutrition support therapy is optimal for gut and muscle in the
adult critically ill patient."
